Midwest Dental Benefits, Inc. (MDB) is a nationwide Third Party Administrator (TPA) for employers with self-funded group dental and vision plans. Offering a unique marketplace alternative to traditional dental and vision insurance, MDB offers self-funded benefit plan options that are tailor-made to clients’ needs, while providing effective cost management and superior service. From its Minneapolis headquarters, MDB provides administration to over 34,500 covered employee lives through contracted relationships with public and private employers.
Our History.
Midwest Dental Benefits, Inc. is a wholly owned for-profit subsidiary of the Minnesota Dental Association. MDB was incorporated by the State of Minnesota in 1995. Since then, the company has dedicated itself to providing cost-effective, self-funded dental and vision plans.

Michael M. Birdman, President

Michael brings over 18 years of solid experience in employee benefits, insurance product sales and client service management to MDB. He joined the company in 2009 to drive financial growth and profitability while maintaining client service, quality and reliability. He works with current and prospective clients and brokers in central and southern Minnesota, Iowa and new developments nationally. Ensuring that MDB remains competitive and innovative are Michael’s key areas of interest. Prior to joining MDB, Michael held management and business development roles with another third party administrator and large national insurance carriers. He holds a MBA from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota and a BSBA from the University of Arizona, Tucson. Michael resides in Edina, MN, with his family.
Michelle Hilger, Director of Sales & Marketing

Michelle has had two tenures with MDB over the past 10 years. Currently, she is responsible for growing MDB’s core business by targeting and developing new and existing broker distribution relationships, direct employers, and endorsed associations. Michelle’s territory is central and northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, Montana and new developments nationally. She has over two decades of sales experience in the insurance market, focusing on employee benefits and property and casualty. Michelle resides in White Bear Lake, MN, with her family.
Debi Loder, Director of Operations

Debi has been with MDB since its incorporation in 1995. She is primarily responsible for all operational areas including claims and finance, as well as vendor management. Debi also actively participates as a key account manager for MDB’s largest account and groups 50 and below by managing renewal activity. During Debi’s tenure with MDB, she has held a multitude of job responsibilities including claims processing, billing, office management and computer specialist. Prior to joining MDB, Debi managed fundraising programs in the non-profit sector. She resides in St. Paul, MN, with her family.
